Top 5 most-read stories June 2022: Colgate innovation plans, microbiota science and Unilever skin immunity
A round-up of CosmeticsDesign-Europe’s most-read news from June 2022 shows interest in Colgate-Palmolive’s strategy to continue premium oral care innovation, scientific findings on sugar beet to balance skin microbiota and big-brand patents from Unilever and Coty.
Big brand innovation and skin microbiota science
Colgate-Palmolive outlined plans in a recent investor meeting to continue its investment in premium oral care innovation despite post-pandemic recessionary woes. Its investor relations officer said for high-end consumers, there had been very little change to spending but also no significant trade down from mid-range consumers either.
A research team made up of Italian and French scientists also published findings around the potential presented by sugar beet in skin care. Findings showed the short-chain fructo-oligosaccharides (scFOS) in sugar beet offered a positive impact on the skin microbiota by restricting the opportunity for pathogen development and encouraging beneficial bacteria growth.
Big brand beauty patents – Unilever and Coty
In an international patent filing, Unilever detailed a method it had developed to stimulate the natural secretion of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) on the skin thus enforcing immunity. It said use of hydroxystearic acid and various blends could be applied to the skin topically to induce AMPs from keratinocytes.
In a separate patent filing, Coty outlined its digital system that enabled dynamic and more representative digital colour adjustments for virtual makeup try-ons, either via video stream or augmented reality (AR). It said the system took conventional virtual try-on techniques to a new level.
Biotech promise in 3-5 years
Givaudan Active Beauty executives also detailed the opportunities presented by biotechnology in developing new molecules, improving processes and creating evidence-based actives for beauty. The executives said that over the next three to five years, there could be so much achieved.
