Women in packaging event: ‘Better living through innovation and sustainability’

The event “Better Living through Innovation and Sustainability” takes place in London College of Fashion, 20 John Prince’s Street, London, W1G 0BJ, on the 12 December 2018, 10.30-18.00.

It is open to people who would like to understand the current packaging trends in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, drinks and other industries.  

We spoke to organiser Dr Milica Stevic, Lecturer in Cosmetic Science and the UK Packaging Society Board Member, about why industry professionals should attend the event, and what they can get from it.

What is the purpose of the conference?​

In this conference, experts from a variety of industries such as food, cosmetics, and recycling will take the audience through the innovations and sustainability of packaging and discuss their contribution to better living.

“The event will provide an invaluable opportunity for the audience to network and learn about current innovative packaging concepts such as personalisation and digital, as well as sustainable materials​,” explains Dr Stevic.

Why is the event relevant to industry professionals?​

This is an educational, non-profit event organised by the UK Packaging Society and London College of Fashion.

The main objective, according to Dr Stevic, is to provide expert views on current packaging issues to those with an interest in packaging.

In addition, individuals considering a career in packaging will be able to learn about the complexity, challenges, and importance of the packaging industry.

“Packaging conferences are often very expensive and restricted events so those not directly involved in the packaging industry often rely on the media and marketing information to learn about this important area that concerns everyone​,” the industry expert explains.

“This event provides an opportunity – at affordable ticket prices, £30 for delegates and £20 for students – to hear expert opinion about fundamental topics concerning packaging, such as plastics, recycling, biodegradation, Blue Planet, sustainability, and innovative concepts​.”

What trends and consumer or regulatory demands in the industry does it respond to?​

Six female experts will take the audience through the current innovations and the sustainability of packaging.

They will then discuss their contribution to better living and participate in a panel discussion answering audience questions.

What key topics will the event cover, and why?​

A key discussion will be around plastic (micro-, bio-, and single use- plastic) and its alternative materials, and the question whether we really have to go “plastic free”.

A detailed narrative of recycling will be provided, comprising what every brand, business owner, or individual should be aware of.

Moreover, the importance of education in packaging and where the UK stands versus the rest of the world will be considered.

Finally, how media presentation affects our rational thinking and directs government action will be examined, together with long-term health and environmental implications.
