Startup launches propolis-based skin care ingredient that could: “address unmet needs" in the beauty industry

It has utilised patented​ technology to develop a Phenolic Acids Polymer Extract that’s derived from propolis – a natural, bee-based product that is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and antimicrobial properties – and said it could also potentially reduce the reliance on common preservatives in skin care formulations.

The startup, which is a spin-off from nutritional supplement business Hedera Ltd, said the new pharmaceutical-grade, standardised, natural extract formulation has “potent biological properties specially designed for skin care” ​and that this extract represents a “game-changer for the cosmetics industry.”​

According to ApiotiX Technologies, the extract offers a natural solution for skin care, anti-ageing products, and inflammatory treatment. It also stated that it “demonstrates exceptional biological activity, influencing skin cells, and signalling pathways” ​and that it also “enhances the stability of typically delicate compounds, potentially reducing the reliance on common preservatives.”​

"Proven clinical efficacy"​

The COO of ApiotiX Technologies, Dr Božo Radić shared: "We firmly believe that our solution can address unmet needs in the luxury and prestige cosmetic industry. Our technology's solid scientific foundation and proven clinical efficacy make it a promising addition to the world of skin care."​

The company has already secured patents for this technology across key markets such as US, EU, Japan, China, New Zealand, Mexico, and Brazil.

It also said it had “conducted a rigorous clinical study to validate the remarkable efficacy of its Phenolic Acids Polymer Extract in two concentrations: ‘A’ and ‘B’ creams applied twice a day.”​

The double-blind study, which was conducted over 28 days with 40 female participants, including those with sensitive and non-sensitive dry skin, yielded “highly promising results in a dose-response manner,” ​according to Dr Radić.

Its key findings included:

• After a 28-day regimen using product A (the lower extract dose), participants experienced an average improvement in anti-wrinkle efficacy by 25% compared to baseline.

• In the case of product B (higher extract dose), a 34% average improvement in anti-wrinkle efficacy was observed after 28 days of continuous use.

• A comprehensive dermatological assessment for tolerance was conducted over 56 days and revealed no adverse skin alterations associated with use of the cream.
