Cosmetics Design spoke to the chief scientific officer at YUN, Ingmar Claes, to found out more about the latest development in skin microbiome scientific research.

Speaking to reporter Natasha Spencer at the sidelines of the recently held Cosmetics Design Summit on Microbiome Skin Care Innovation, Ingmar, in this video interview Ingmar reveals more about the part that science is playing in the growth and development of this trend.

What's happening to skin microbiome?

Environmental hazards and chemicals such as antibacterial ingredients and emulsifiers are threatening the natural health of the skin microbiome, which is leading to skin sensitivity and the growing importance of maintaining the right kind of bacteria for healthy skin.

This phenomenon is providing plenty of work for Ingmar and his team, who are working towards creating formulations that enhance the right bacteria, and in turn serve to enhance the skin's health.

During the conversation, Ingmar stresses that the fight is to get the right balance of good and bad bacteria, with skin conditions such as dermatitis and acne being linked to overgrowth of bad bacterias.
